Mars and the Gorgon Continued

Danae went into the hole. She did not know what was going to happen. The plan was to try to kill her here before she even reached the jail door. The solider locked the door and left her in the dark with no food or water. Sitting down in the muck, she saw the face of her hateful ex-husband peering from the bars.
The wicked alchemist twisted his fingers and said a curse to transform Danae. All the snakes slithered around her and became intertwined in her hair, and then they were her hair. The alchemist disappeared just as the soldiers came back to see what the ruckus was about. They barley looked through the bars, when Danae turned to face them and they were petrified. The serpent framed face had turned them to stone.

The alchemist’s spell had turned Danae into a gorgon. She had snakes for hair and anyone who looked at her was turned to stone. Venus saw all this and took pity on Danae. She came down through the sky, in a shower of golden light and melted the jail wall. Danae was free to escape, yet still she would not move from her corner. She was afraid to go out into the world as a monster.

1500's Color Study

Mars and the Gorgon Continued

Mars and the Gorgon
Continued

One day, Danae went outside to pick some flowers still unaware that a child was inside her. She just happened to be by the small wood, when Mars came toward her as a dog. She pet him and decided to take him home as her pet. Now Mars was living in the same house as his former lover and for a while he abandoned his reckless and cruel nature and became as loyal as a dog.
Mars noticed Danae getting bigger and eating more. Her husband began to notice too and grew suspicious. The man had many secrets. He had special powers and could see things that other people could not. If people only knew, he would be brunt at the stake. He saw the baby inside his wife and could hear its heart beating.
He wanted firm control over the household. He could not let his wife have the children of another man.  He questioned her about her pregnancy and when she did not answer, he took her and shook her around. Mars growled at him and grabbed hold of the husband’s long gown with his jaws.
“Back off beast!  This is our quarrel. you will be locked up along with my adulterous wife,”
The man decided to let the government punish his wife. He dragged her to the royal court.
Queen Judith sat on her throne as the prisoners were dragged away. Her weak husband, Charles cowered in her presence. She was a very difficult woman. The mean alchemist threw his wife at the mercy of the court. Danae’s husband pointed to her and said to the king and queen.
“This woman is guilty of adultery and treason, I come here today to ask for a divorce and to ensure that she will be severely punished,”
Judith looked at the dirty, beaten wife with a disgusted look, thinking of how much this woman looked like a prostitute. The queen had made up her mind.
“Very, well I sentence her guilty, and her punishment shall be the following. She shall spend 10 years in prison, but not before she spends a day in the Pit of Despair. My verdict is, final case closed.”
The solders dragged Danae off to the old churchyard, where a black dungeon was built among the graves. People called this ‘the Pit of Despair’. People would be put in this crude dark hole, where snakes, rats, and other vermin would bite chucks of bloody flesh from their rotting bones.

Mars and the Gorgon

Mars and the Gorgon
Chapter 1: The Rays of Gold

March, 1500

Danae sat by the ebony window frame, sewing a sachet for her husband. Life was good in the manor expect that they had no children. Danae’s husband was an alchemist and spent all day in his study making potions and medicine. Danae was lonely for her husband’s touch and a child to call her own, but her husband had a cold heart and won’t not satisfy her needs. She looked at the crimson velvet of the Fabric in her hand and the black window frame and thought of a child with red lips and black hair.

Just then, in a vast unearthly realm, the great spirt, Mars, heard her Prayers. He looked down and saw through the ebony window, the most beautiful girl he had ever seen. He had to have her. Mars thought of a plan. The man turned into golden rays of light and entered the room. He took the juice of a daffodil and squeezed it down into her eyes. The juice put her sound asleep and she lay backward in her chair with her legs spread wide open. Mars turned into a man and proceeded to have his way with her. When he was finished, he had planted a divine seed in her belly that was already beginning to grow into a baby.

After that Mars kept his distance as he watched the girl from afar. He took the form of a woodpecker and watched her on the windowsill. Then her mean, husband shooed him away. So he took the disguise of a dog and lived in the small wood outside Danae’s room.
